Colorado winters are cold and dry with average temperatures of about 30 degrees F (0 degrees C). Summer temperatures are in the mid 70s (24 degrees C) to mid 80s (30 degrees C), although the thermometer drops quickly when the sun goes down. From October to April, expect lots of snow.
Getting to and from Crested Butte
You can fly into Crested Butte via the Gunnison Crested Butte Regional Airport. Shuttles are available to take you from the airport right to your resort or hotel. If you’re driving, Crested Butte is 200 miles southwest of Denver.

Crested Butte is laid-back and relaxed so you won’t need anything more formal than jeans and a fleece sweater. High altitudes make for high UV indexes so make sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, no matter what season you’re visiting in.
Things to do in Crested Butte
Although Crested Butte has become famous around the world for its skiing and snowboarding, there’s plenty to do here all year round. Summer brings golf, white water rafting, boating and horseback riding. If you ever get tired of skiing the slopes, you can try dogsledding, snowshoeing, tubing, snowmobiling or even ice fishing. Kids will enjoy joining the SnowMonsters club and littler ones can spend the day in one of the area’s licensed childcare facilities.
Staying safe and healthy in Crested Butte
The air in Crested Butte is very dry, so make sure you stay hydrated. Avoid getting high altitude sickness by staying well-rested and drinking lots of water throughout your stay. Some physicians recommend taking altitude sickness medication just prior to visiting and for a few days into your visit.
