DESTIN

Enjoy the sugar sand beaches of the Emerald Coast in Destin, FL.In recent years, Destin has developed from a small seaside fishing village into an internationally known vacation destination. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection estimates that more than 80 percent of the Emerald Coast’s 4.5 million annual visitors make the journey primarily to visit Destin. The city is popular with all ages, and is a friendly and appropriate destination for families with children.

Besides the endless shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico, don’t miss Destin Harbor. This lagoon, formed by the Holiday Isle sand spit, is a little piece of paradise with tranquil, clear water and its own beaches. Destin also provides access to the Gulf Islands National Seashore via Santa Rosa Island, just across the East Pass from Destin.

Destin is a beach lover’s paradise, but those who avoid the sun will find plenty of activities.Although it has grown dramatically, the community remains extremely friendly and laid back. Numerous tourist attractions, from water parks to shopping outlets, are conveniently located in town. Beach attire is the norm, with casual dress acceptable at all but the most formal restaurants.

A lot of the Gulf Coast region was severely damaged in hurricanes Ivan, Katrina, Rita and Dennis. Destin is up and running and open for business. However, some areas are not so fortunate, such as nearby historic Fort Pickens, which was destroyed by Ivan, rebuilt and destroyed again by Dennis.

Always call to verify the status of historic properties along the Gulf Coast before driving out to visit.
